Ancestors Gathering
The Ancestors Gathering encampment is held in Riverside Park, a beautiful meadow-like setting with mature trees and open areas along the banks of the Huron River. This portion of the Heritage Festival is a representation of the historical background of the City of Ypsilanti.
Ypsilanti, formerly called Woodruff's Grove, has been around since 1823. Our citizens have played a part in the history, not only of this area, but the state and nation. The Ancestors Gathering historical encampment helps the Heritage Festival celebrate those times.
It is sure to be an enjoyable weekend of camping in the traditional style with lots of people in traditional costumes milling about, trading goods, demonstrating crafts and lost skills, and teaching the public about the history of the area. Towards evening, the campfires light up and the story telling begins. This event is a must-see for the whole family!
Accurate presenters of history are wanted for demonstrations and entertainment to educate the public on our historical past. Families, Military, Traders and Native Peoples extremely welcome.
